AREAS OF RESEARCH
Dr. Zhang's previous research was focused on the mechanism of general anesthesia, including (1) the effect of volatile anesthetic on the potassium channels in larval CNS neurons of Drosophila, (2) the effect of intravenous anesthetics on the spinal dorsal horn neurons in rats, and (3) the effect of propofol on synaptic transmission and on extrasynaptic GABAA receptors in rat NTS neurons. His present studies focus on the neural mechanisms, especially electrophysiological properties, involved in the regulation of respiration under both pathological and physiological conditions.
