AREAS OF RESEARCH
Molecular epidemiological approach is employed to study the biomarkers in smokers with high risk for lung cancer in general population and in workers occupationally exposed to chemicals that include coke-oven emission, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene. Three classes of biomarkers are studied which include biomarker of exposure, biomarker of effect, and biomarker of susceptibility. This approach allows us to understand the mechanism of action in in vivo human model and the biomarkers discovered and validated in these studies will lead to novel approach for chemoprevention and intervention. My current studies include: Genetic determinants such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for gene-specific promoter methylation in exfoliated cells from the lung; Association between DNA repair capacity and gene-specific promoter methylation in exfoliated cells from the lung; Genetic determinants for DNA repair capacity.
