AREAS OF RESEARCH
Dr. Reed coordinates inhalation health effect studies for the National Environmental Respiratory Center (NERC) located at LRRI. The core NERC health studies are designed to compare the health impact of the "atmospheres" or pollutant mixtures classes that comprise the primary airborne contaminants of the air we breathe. These atmospheres include tobacco smoke (mainstream, sidestream), wood smoke (softwood, hardwood), cooking fumes (vegetable, meat), road dust (paved and unpaved), diesel engine exhaust (old and new engine technologies), gasoline engine exhaust (catalyst and non-catalyst), and power plant emissions (focus on secondary aerosols). The NERC studies comprise the most extensive attempt to date to establish a comprehensive health effects database addressing the inhaled environmental mixtures problem. http://www.nercenter.org
Dr. Reed also serves as study director for contract sponsored FDA and EPA regulatory toxicology studies. Dr. Reed's basic science interests include the toxicology of inhaled toxicants and chemical and biochemical toxicology.
