Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute Acquires Mind Research Network
LRRI Family of Companies Grows
January 5, 2012 ….ABQ NM. The Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (LRRI) announced the recent acquisition of the Mind Research Network (MRN). Both companies are non-profit research organizations headquartered in Albuquerque NM and known for specific studies and research on the mind and respiratory health. MRN was founded in Albuquerque by then U.S. Senator Pete Domenici in 1998 to study mental illness and other brain diseases. The Mind Research Network will become a subsidiary of the flagship company Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute. The new combined entity is located on three campuses; ABQ off Gibson, Kirtland Air Force Base and on the UNM medical campus.
“The joining of our biomedical research institutions will provide financial stability to MRN, create new collaborative research opportunities for both organizations and offer new paths for funding to LRRI and MRN” said Dr. Robert Rubin, President and CEO of LRRI.“ He continued, “LRRI has over the past 16 years developed a business model that involves undertaking original discovery research and directed contract work for the government and industry. It is this model that will be employed in the future evolution of MRN.”
Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute is a private, non-profit biomedical research organization dedicated to improving public health through research on the prevention, treatment and cure of respiratory disease. The Mind Research Network is an independent non-profit research organization dedicated to advancing the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and brain injury. MRN consists of an interdisciplinary association of scientists located at universities, national laboratories and research centers and is focused on imaging technology and its emergence as an integral element of neuroscience investigation.
Rubin continued, “We are already joining forces to study the brain function mechanisms that accompany nicotine addiction in smokers and are planning joint projects related to how the central and peripheral nervous systems control breathing and airway inflammation. “ Rubin continued, “The MRN scientists will enhance our federal and pharmaceutical contract and science service businesses in new areas such as PTSD and traumatic brain injury. “
