Scope
This conference, the tenth in a series begun in 1974, continues the tradition of these meetings by focusing on research on the health effects of radionuclides incorporated internally in the body. Previous conferences took place in Alta, Utah (1974), Neuherberg (1976), Lisbon (1977), Lake Geneva, Wisconsin (1981), Neuherberg (1984), Bethesda, Maryland (1988), Heidelberg (1994), Tokyo (1999) and Neuherberg (2004). Recognizing that the issues of interest to us have changed over time, the scope of this meeting is being expanded to reflect those changes and the nature of current research involving radionuclides.
The tenth conference will address subjects related to early and late-occurring health effects of radionuclides in man, including knowledge being gained from epidemiological investigations, cell and molecular studies, and measurement, bioassay and dose assessment methods relevant to human populations. Information from experimental animal studies concerning mechanisms of deterministic and stochastic biological effects, dose-response relationships, uniformity of radiation dose distribution including microdosimetry, will be included. New aspects of the use of radionuclides, particularly alpha-emitters, in medical therapy will also be addressed.
Because of recent concerns about the possible exposure of people from the intentional use of radionuclides in radiological dispersal devices, new research is being done to identify compounds, drugs and treatment methods that can prevent, mitigate or treat the effects of radiation exposure. Results from this new research are encouraged, including decorporating agents both physical and chemical, and drugs that mitigate against damage from radiation (free radical scavengers, cytokines, growth factors, stem cell therapy, and others).
