Lovelace Biomedical and Environmental Research Institute (LBERI), a Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (LRRI) wholly owned subsidiary, offers capabilities for research, development, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E) to provide improved medical countermeasures against chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosives (CBRNE) and emerging threats. LBERI functions as the corporate entity responsible for all federal programs.
 
 

 

LBERI, one of the largest private, not-for-profit research organizations in the nation, conducts basic and applied science research, as well as test and evaluation. LBERI offers a range of research capabilities to government clients and government-funded industry and health organizations, to produce innovative solutions to research challenges.  With  diverse research capabilities and close working relationships with small and large organizations such as universities, laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, trade organizations, and technology transfer start-ups, LBERI is qualified to provide research support to government programs.  LBERI scientific and administrative staff are experienced in forming flexible, multidisciplinary teams to address research issues and client needs. We have a history of providing innovative and novel solutions to research problems.

LBERI  is the only organization in the United States currently capable of undertaking countermeasure studies (CBRNE threats) all at the same facility using  the same infrastructure and personnel. LBERI provides aerosol science support, numerous small and large  animal models, and studies conducted in compliance with GLP standards.  Sulfur mustard, sarin, soman, ricin, botulinum toxin, anthrax, plague, avian influenza, tularemia, SARS, as well as fine aerosols of plutonium, americium, and cesium are examples of numerous agents currently studied.

CBRNE: LBERI offers considerable chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE) research capabilities to the defense community.  LBERI has conducted studies for over 40 years with some of the most hazardous materials that can be encountered.  Personnel Reliability: LBERI maintains all applicable occupational health and medical surveillance requirements and background investigations for our staff.  Our South Campus is located on Kirtland Air Force Base.  Many staff members must meet and maintain health, safety and security requirements to comply with base access as well as applicable regulations and best practices associated with the research agents in use.  Approximately 200 employees are currently approved through one or more different sets of health and security requirements.

Licensing and Certification

LBERI is licensed, registered, or certified by regulating agencies and organizations:

  • Board-certified Laboratory Animal Veterinarians, Pathologists, and Toxicologists
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technicians (LAT) or Technologists (LATG) certification
  • Certified quality assurance specialists
  • Certified health and safety specialists
  • Compliance with animal welfare regulations and maintenance of AAALAC accreditation for over 20 years.  All animal use protocols are reviewed and approved by the LRRI/LBERI IACUC
  • U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) registered animal research facility, select Agent registration
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Select Agent registration
  • U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
  • Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), licensed for work with radioactive materials
  • DOE licensed for radioactive waste disposal with NTSB, licensed for retention and work with radioactive materials
