Exploring Lung Biology & Respiratory Disease

LRRI integrates basic genetic, cellular, and systems biology with animal models in a multidisciplinary approach to determine the causes and cures of respiratory diseases.  A basic understanding of the biology of the lung and mechanisms of the disease processes is critical to successful research in this area.      

 Research in respiratory tract cancer focuses on genetic and cellular mechanisms, along with early detection, susceptibility factors, and animal-human extrapolation. Studies of the pulmonary immune response which underlies numerous respiratory diseases such as COPD, asthma, and pulmonary fibrosis, explore the effects of inhaled antigens and other agents on normal immune response. The research focus for the program in respiratory infection and host defense seeks to further the understanding of lung-pathogen interactions and immune-mediated defense in respiratory disease. LRRI is examining the role of cell secretion and signaling on cell-cycle control.

 Exploring lung biology in both normal and diseased states ultimately leads to insights that allow for the rational design for cures.
