In addition, your gift will benefit families, companies, institutions, and organizations that are affected by the increasing costs of healthcare and lost work hours and school time, by educating them on how to effectively deal with respiratory disease so it does not preclude productivity.
80 million Americans suffer from serious respiratory diseases - either as a patient, parent of a patient, or spouse of a patient.
52 million Americans are acutely touched by asthma - patients and parent/spouses.
Adding serious respiratory allergies, 120 million patients and parent/spouses are impacted.
17 million Americans have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Minority populations bear a disproportionate burden of all respiratory diseases.
Lung cancer is the most prevalent cancer. More people die of lung cancer than breast, prostate, and colon cancer combined.

Why Donate?
One out of four people in this country will die of respiratory disease. That is an astounding fact. And there are more: Each year, the healthcare and other costs associated with asthma alone add up to $6.2 billion. Lung cancer kills more than twice as many women as breast cancer, and more than twice as many men as prostate cancer. I could go on, but the point is that the respiratory health burden on this country is substantial. And yet, respiratory disease is one of the most inadequately studied.
That is why Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute has devoted its research resources exclusively to curing respiratory disease. We are one of the nation's largest, independent, non-profit basic science biomedical research organizations, and the nation's only such organization wholly dedicated to curing respiratory disease. Our staff is committed to curing respiratory disease through research aimed at understanding the causes and biological mechanisms, eliminating exposures to causal agents, and developing better treatments. We cover the whole research spectrum, from basic research to clinical trials. We recognize that scientific creativity is impossible without adequate financial support. We now seek your help, commitment, and financial support. Our goal is to find cures for and eliminate respiratory disease.
We ask others to join in our commitment by contributing to fund respiratory research. Planned giving offers a variety of ways to help fund research now and in the future. I and my colleagues at the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute greatly appreciate your continuing support.
