Discovering New Therapies & Preventions
LRRI is dedicated to finding new cures for respiratory diseases by working with the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, using both a fee-for-service and collaborative arrangements. Efforts range from
- proof-of-principle efficacy studies in small and large animal models of asthma and COPD/emphysema
- animal models of RSV
- seasonal flu
- inflammatory disease
- lung cancer
LRRI remains one of the country’s only providers of a canine glucose clamp model used to develop diabetes medications (i.e., Pfizer/Nektar Therapeutics inhaled insulin, Exubera™) Other more traditional contract services are provided also such as:
- early metabolism studies
- pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic distribution studies
- traditional toxicology studies
The above studies can be designed to satisfy the preclinical (trial) safety requirement of the FDA and other regulatory bodies. Coupled with LRRI’s clinical trials unit, Lovelace Scientific Resources (a for-profit subsidiary), and LRRI’s clinical radiotracer imaging capabilities (SPECT-gamma camera), LRRI provides a realistic “bench-to-bedside” paradigm for the NIH and the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry to utilize in any phase of the drug development process.
